- magnus has been gone for half a day before julia notices he’s left something (it’s something silly – a fantasy sleep apnea machine or his only good pair of socks) and she thinks that she’s been itching to get out for a day anyway. she catches up to him before dark and the look of surprised delight on his face when she reaches him on the road is worth having to share a sleeping bag that’s barely big enough for magnus alone
- when they hear the news about ravensroost, they get home as quickly as they can, but all the dust has settled by the time they get back. the rubble of the hammer and tongs is indistinguishable from the rest, so julia has no way of finding her father’s body. magnus doesn’t start to cry until she does, probably because she’s owed that at least, even if her father was like a father to magnus too
- magnus has terrible nightmares for a while; he’s absolutely terrified thinking of what could have happened if julia didn’t come after him. she locks her arms around him until he stops shaking, lets him hold her until he can’t doubt that she’s alive. julia doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about what could have happened; it didn’t happen, so it doesn’t matter
- taako and julia get along like a house on fire. they were both only children, but taako is the weird elf little brother she never had. she and merle don’t really know what to make of each other until taako and magnus both get food poisoning and julia and merle end up getting drunk together and belting show tunes on the moon
- julia likes the director just fine, but there’s something about her that she can’t quite pin down. “she just seems so sad,” she tries to explain to magnus. magnus swears he has no idea what she means
- (after the story and song, lup finds her cleaning off her weapons. “i would shake your hand if it wouldn’t pass right through me,” lup says. “these dumbasses would have made a real mess of things without you. thank you.” and julia smiles and says, “my pleasure.”)
