Little-Known Gods and Spirits #137: the Wyrms of Service, twin dragons who may be invoked to enforce the absolute letter of a contract. They will vigorously enforce any terms regardless of their fairness or legality, but have no power in the presence of a serving judge or magistrate, and may be warded off by reciting legal codes – it doesn’t matter which laws – in a loud, firm voice.

That pun is absolutely horrible.

…Now I kinda want to only use gods whose names are puns in my games.

Other spirits and divine beings from the same pantheon include:

  • Mineral Wights, the ghosts of ancient kings who litigate endlessly with the dwarves over rightful ownership of the Earth’s riches
  • Restraining Ogres, who ensure that sacred places are not profaned by the presence of the unworthy
  • The Statue of Limitations, a great stern-faced monolith that offers absolution from any sin in exchange for years of one’s life
  • Vermin of Proof, not so much a entity as an infestation, which consume and destroy anything whose existence is undocumented
  • Voir Deer, which judge and find wanting

(The rites and observances of these entities are left as an exercise for the reader.)

When considering the Voir Deer, don’t forget the Vole Dire; tiny magical rodent-spirits with true sight that compel the truth, and nothing but the truth, from those who hold them u_u

Side note: they also squeak exclusively in Norman French, for some reason 😐 😐

Another spirit of note: the Sidebarghest. These are psychopomps, transporting those who request consultation with their chosen Power of Law to said Power. Such consultations are requested through one of three traditional pass-phrases, and they freeze time in whichever plane the consultee was transported from during their absence. Notably, anything said within one meter of a Sidebarghest cannot be heard,
even by magical and divine means,

by anyone or anything not party to the statement or conversation.

Side note: they’re also very gossipy creatures, and thus make great sources for news and trivia.
