Today, October 22nd, 2018 in every town and city in the province are the municipal elections.
If you care about housing affordability, public transit, ride sharing, property taxation, poverty and how your city is developed (i.e. gentrification or not), you should vote. Municipal politics aren’t flashy but the effects of this election will likely effect your life way more than any Provincial or Federal elections.
You will need 2 pieces of ID generally to vote: 1 with your name and address, and another with your name. If you’re not registered to vote, its not a problem. Registering in person with your ID doesn’t take very long.
Generally polls open in the morning and close in the evening. I believe most polls will close at 8 PM.
Note: not everywhere requires two pieces of ID! You need the voter card issued by mail (which everyone of voting age and eligibility should’ve gotten by now iirc) and one piece of ID that’s proof of name & address that matches the voter card!
Not registered? Bring two pieces of ID (at least one with proof of residency) to be on the safe side and register at the polling station
In Ontario you do not need the voter card you can vote with just ID.
The voter card makes it an easier process, it even says so on the card, but it is not a requirement.
So if you’ve lost or misplaced yours, don’t worry, go to your polling station and present ID and they can help you vote.
as someone who lives in Ontario and voted like 20 minutes ago, i can vouch for this. for some reason im never in the system and never get the voter card, so i always just bring my photo ID card and fill out the form at the table. the whole process takes like 15 minutes (that includes filling out the ballot) so it’s not a huge deal or loss of time
i literally didnt bring anything on me and just showed them a photo of my signed lease on my phone and they were like “yup thats good!”
