I can knit exactly one (1) hat pattern in the right size
How to get hats that fit (some advice taken from Stephanie Pearl McPhee, the Yarn Harlot):
The human head is around, roughly 3 times the length of a person’s hand.
Have everyone in the family make hand turkeys at Thanksgiving. (And then confiscate them)
Then multiply a person’s hand length x 3, subtract 1” for some negative ease (to stay on the head) and multiply that number by your gauge of stitches per inch.
- I know gauge swatches are a pain but if you’re getting 4 stitches per inch, you probably need 80 stitches but if you’re getting 6spi you need 120 stitches and that’s a BIG difference.
Knit the hat until it is as long as the recipient’s hand before you start the decreases. Tada! Hats that fit!
