Spoilerphobia makes me grit my teeth enough as it is, but what’s getting increasingly annoying right along with it: sites that outright lecture you not to read their article/watch a video/etc. until you’ve seen the content first, because spoilers! Don’t click this link unless you meet our arbitrary requirements, because spoilers! Consume our media only in the way we say you’re supposed to, because spoilers!
Seriously, people, stop that. Some of us actually are interested in spoilers, and would rather know what we’re in for before investing hours and no small amount of money in a movie, book, game, or whatever. And assuming that everyone’s bought into this I CAN ONLY ENJOY ANYTHING IF EVERYONE ELSE PROTECTS MY IGNORANCE ABOUT IT, AND IF I’M NOT SURPRISED THEN EVERYTHING IS WORTHLESS mentality is nearly as obnoxious as the mentality itself.
All you have to do is say your review contains spoilers. That’s it! The rest of us can decide whether or not we want to proceed based on that fact. Any other instructions are not necessary, and at this point, if you start acting bossy or overwrought about your spoiler warnings, you’ve already communicated enough about your attitudes and approach to media to kill my interest in whatever you had to say.
In conclusion, everyone on all sides of this needs to get. over. this. spoiler. shit. already.
